Several essential oils - in particular lavender, lemon, rosemary, sage, tea tree and thyme -have been touted as being helpful to blemished skin.
Indeed, as Myriam Zaoui and Eric Malka pointed out in their book The Art of Shaving, 'The practice of using essential oils for medicinal and cosmetic purposes is at least 6,000 years old.... From the ancient Egyptians to the Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Chinese and North American Indians, essential oils have been used for... their therapeutic characteristics.'
How can one argue with such a lengthy pedigree - except, perhaps, to point out that for virtually that entire time, the medicine practised by those ancients commonly resulted in a life expectancy less than half of what we enjoy today? Notwithstanding this obvious fact, old wives' tales seem to gain vigour with age.
Perhaps essential oils have some therapeutic value. Certainly, advocates of aromatherapy swear by them. However, they do nothing for acne!
