OLD WIVES' TALES ARE FASCINATING because even when they are clearly wrong, they often contain a grain of truth -or at least a grain of rather perverse logic -which seems to make them plausible... and therefore even more thoroughly wrong!

To cite just one example, take the well-known 'fact' that cranberry juice is good for kidney and urinary tract problems. The truth is that, medically, cranberry juice is no better or worse than orange juice. However, it is a far less universally popular taste, and it tends to cost more. Reasonably, then, one would expect that orange would be the juice of choice. Nevertheless, virtually all nurses and hospital administrators and quite a few urologists - specify cranberry juice, sincerely believing it to be better for their patients. But why, when it is not?

The answer probably lies in a long-known but largely forgotten fact, namely that cranberry juice (unlike orange or any other fruit juice) has the unique property of deodorizing urine... that, of course, makes nurses' clean-up task a lot pleasanter. Over the years, that correct fact appears to have been transmogrified into 'cranberry juice is better'!

Similarly, any number of old wives’ tales surrounding acne, while wrong, has a foundation of a correct but misinterpreted fact. Let us consider the most widely circulated of these tales and identify whether they are true or false and, if false, how they gained their currency.
